A Look Into Paramount Pictures 2022: Celebrating 110 Years with a Comeback?
2021.12.11 07:20 valkyria_knight881A Look Into Paramount Pictures 2022: Celebrating 110 Years with a Comeback?
Paramount+ was launched earlier this year in an attempt to make Paramount as recognizable of a brand as Disney or Universal (Stupid Warner Bros for not naming HBO Max as WB Max). Despite movie theaters being back up in operation, Paramount still released more films on streaming than in movie theaters. Let’s look into how well Paramount Pictures did this year.
Coming 2 America - Paramount kicked off the year by sending two of their films to streaming at the same time on March 4, 2021: Coming 2 America and The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Let’s talk about Coming 2 America first. This film was originally set for a theatrical release, but got sent to Amazon Prime Video. It’s a comedy sequel to a 33 year old film that isn’t as good as the original. Under normal circumstances, I think Coming 2 America would’ve made $50M domestically and $80M worldwide. With a budget of $60M, I doubt this would’ve been a success for Paramount. They definitely made the right move with moving Coming 2 America onto streaming.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run - The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run was the other film that got sent to streaming on March 4, 2021. This was a launch title for Paramount+. While it isn’t a bad movie to start with, I think a normal theatrical release could’ve worked as well. Under normal circumstances, I could see the film making $110M domestically and $220M worldwide. It would be a huge step down from Sponge Out of Water (I honestly like Sponge Out of Water more than Sponge on the Run. The Spongebob Movie is a masterpiece though), but I think it would’ve been a moderate success.
Without Remorse - Without Remorse is the next film that Paramount sent to streaming. This would be the second of three films to be sent to Amazon Prime Video. Under normal circumstances, I could see the film making $80M domestically and $120M worldwide. If the budget wasn’t above $50M, maybe this could’ve been a small profit, but it was probably for the best that Paramount moved this film to streaming.
A Quiet Place Part II - A Quiet Place Part II was meant to be released a month after Sonic the Hedgehog back in 2020. However, COVID changed those plans, but Paramount decided that A Quiet Place Part II would still be the next Paramount theatrical film after Sonic the Hedgehog in America. When that film was released, movie theaters didn’t become so quiet and they haven’t since. Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II are credited as films that started the return of weekly films from major film studios. The film made $297M worldwide on a budget of $61M, being a success despite doing less than the first film. Under normal circumstances, I could see the film hitting $400M worldwide. Regardless, A Quiet Place Part II would be the highest grossing Paramount film this year, which is actually kind of sad.
Infinite - This would be the second of four films to be sent to Paramount+. And it was a good thing Infinite was sent to Paramount+. At most, I could see the film making $30M domestically and $70M worldwide, which I doubt would be considered a success. This film would’ve bombed with a theatrical release, regardless if it came out during the pandemic or not.
The Tomorrow War - This would be the final 2021 Paramount film to be sent to Amazon Prime Video. The Tomorrow War had a budget of $200M and got mixed reviews. It was definitely a good idea for Paramount to send this film to streaming. However, under normal circumstances, I could see The Tomorrow War making $200M domestically and $500M worldwide. I think Chris Pratt’s stardom could’ve helped carry the film to a moderate success.
Snake Eyes - At first, it seemed like Paramount made good decisions in terms of sending their films to streaming. And then Snake Eyes got a theatrical release. The film was meant to kickstart the GI Joe franchise, but Snake Eyes only made $40M worldwide on a budget of $110M, being a box office bomb. With how Snake Eyes did and with the possibility of the Delta variant being a threat to moviegoing (spoilers: not really), Paramount would give Clifford the Big Red Dog a hybrid release and send Jackass Forever and Top Gun: Maverick to 2022. Thanks Snake Eyes.
PAW Patrol: The Movie - PAW Patrol: The Movie came to save Paramount from ending the summer on a shitty note after Snake Eyes, and they did surprisingly well. PAW Patrol: The Movie made $130M worldwide on a budget of $26M, even with the film also releasing on Paramount+. Under normal circumstances, I could see the film making as much as $200M worldwide. Regardless, this was good news for Paramount as they now have another franchise to rely on every 2-3 years.
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin - Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin was next in line, but only for Paramount+. While it did end up being a bad film, I think it could’ve been released theatrically. I could see the film making $40M domestically and $60M worldwide, which would be a moderate success with a budget of $10M or less.
Clifford the Big Red Dog - Clifford the Big Red Dog would end the year in terms of theatrical Paramount films, even though it also got released on Paramount+. However, the film would only make $52M worldwide on a budget of $64M. Under normal circumstances, I could see the film making $110M worldwide, which still would mean the film failed to break even. However, Paramount still announced a sequel for some reason.
Rumble - It’s a sports comedy film directed by Hamish Grieve. This is the second Paramount Animation film to be sent to Paramount+ after The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which is kind of depressing for Paramount Animation. Paramount Animation was going to reinvent itself with that new logo being unveiled. And then COVID happened, which led to The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run and Rumble moving to Paramount+. To be fair, it didn’t seem like Rumble was going to do that well anyways, especially with animated films not doing so well this year. Under normal circumstances, I could see the film making $40M domestically and $100M worldwide, which wouldn’t be good for the usual Paramount Animation budget.
The next year is coming, and it’s time to look at what Paramount has in store for everyone next year. I’ll try to keep it short (with a basic description of each one if necessary and how well it might do). The numbers I have won’t be accurate, so take it with a grain of salt.
It’s a slasher film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and is the fifth film in the Scream franchise (should’ve just called it Scream 5). This film seems to be getting a lot of hype from the fanbase and could definitely be like what Halloween 2018 was to Halloween 1978. I don’t think it would be the biggest film in the franchise like what Halloween 2018 was, but it could be the start of a new set of movies for Paramount. I’d say Scream makes $50M domestically and $110M worldwide, which is more than Scream 4, but not as much as the first three.
It’s a reality comedy film directed by Jeff Tremaine and is the fourth main film in the Jackass franchise. Not only will Jackass Forever easily triple its budget on its opening weekend, I think it has a shot at being the biggest Jackass film. This could be the last Jackass film for many of the main cast members (especially Johnny Knoxville), so this would be a film people would want to show up for in the movie theaters. The fact that they’re also bringing in new cast members may imply that Paramount has plans for more Jackass films after Knoxville leaves, but we shall see. I’d say this film makes $140M domestically and $200M worldwide.
It’s a horror film directed by William Brent Bell and is the prequel to Orphan (2009). I know this doesn’t have a release date, but I think Paramount should release this film theatrically, especially if the budget is similar to the first film’s budget of $20M. I could see Orphan: First Kill making $40M domestically and $100M worldwide, being profitable for Paramount. The production company for the film is Paramount Players, a production label that Paramount has barely used since the pandemic. With the founder, Jim Gianopulos, gone, I wouldn’t be shocked if Paramount Players becomes defunct in a few years.
It’s an adventure comedy film directed by Aaron Nee and Adam Nee. It shares a similar name to Dora and the Lost City of Gold, which was also a Paramount film. Maybe Paramount is creating a secret franchise based on the title “The Lost City”, similar to Cloverfield. Imagine the possibilities. Sonic and the Lost City of Chaos Emeralds. Star Trek: The Lost City of Klingons. Transformers: The Lost City of the Allspark. Jackass and the Lost City of Jackasses. Indiana Jones and the Lost City of the Covenant (oh wait, Disney makes future Indiana Jones films now). Not much is known about the film except the plot, in which a romance novelist and a cover model end up in a cutthroat jungle adventure. While this would feel like a film that could be good counter-programming to something better, The Lost City has a weekend to itself in late March with nothing major surrounding it. The Lost City could definitely be a sleeper hit as long as the reviews are good. I could see the film making $60M domestically and $140M worldwide.
It’s an adventure comedy film directed by Jeff Fowler. After watching the trailer, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 definitely feels like a step up from the first film. While the first film was just a road trip film with as many main Sonic characters as there were in Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 seems to go all out and be a full on superhero film. This will do a lot better than the first Sonic the Hedgehog film. I could see the film making $200M domestically and $500M worldwide, possibly making Sonic the Hedgehog as strong a Paramount film franchise is as Star Trek.
It’s an action drama film directed by Joseph Kosinski and is the sequel to Top Gun. It’s also the film where the Japanese and Taiwanese flag got replaced to appeal to the Chinese market. Seeing how tensions are between the United States of America and China, I don’t think it was worth it (though to be fair, I doubt Paramount foresaw what would go on three years in the future). This is the last American film that Tencent would produce, though I wouldn’t be shocked if it went uncredited like with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It’s pretty much the last film in the era of Hollywood where they marketed the movie for the Chinese market. Even then, I wouldn’t be shocked if the film wasn’t released in China. Besides that, what’s seen in trailers looks amazing. I’d say Top Gun: Maverick makes $210M DOM and $550M WW. Not as much as Tom Cruise’s recent Mission: Impossible films, but still a major success for Paramount. Releasing this right after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 means that Paramount is going to make a crap ton of money this Spring.
It’s a western crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. Paramount is supposedly distributing the film theatrically while Apple TV+ gets the streaming rights. I don’t think Killers of the Flower Moon was ever going to make a profit, which is why Paramount didn’t take full responsibility for this film like they did with The Wolf of Wall Street. At most, I could see the film making $110M domestically and $210M worldwide, but I may be a little too optimistic. Nothing against Martin Scorsese or directors, but I think he should tone the budget down for his next few films.
It’s a film directed by David Soren and is from Paramount Animation. After Paramount Animation was given a new logo, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run and Rumble got sent to Paramount+. However, Under the Boardwalk is going to be the first theatrical Paramount Animation film in the 2020s (unless Paramount decides to give up on their animation division for the third time and place the film on Paramount+). Nothing much is known about the film though. I could see the film making as much as $60M domestic and $140M worldwide (I’m guessing animated films won’t be suffering in 2022 like they did this year), though I definitely need a trailer to be more accurate on my prediction.
It’s a superhero film directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost. Not much is known about the film except the plot, in which a kid discovers a secret headquarters under his house that belonged to a superhero. He starts to believe that his estranged father might be a superhero. This seems to be Paramount’s attempt to make a superhero franchise to be like Disney’s Marvel, Warner Bros’ DC, Sony’s Spider-Man, and Universal’s Fast and Furious (though I guess Sonic the Hedgehog could technically be considered a superhero franchise). I’d say this film makes $120M domestically and $250M worldwide. A release in an empty August and positive reviews could make this film a moderate success for Paramount.
It’s an action spy film directed by Christopher McQuarrie and is the seventh film in the Mission: Impossible franchise. If it’s anything like Fallout, this could become even bigger than Fallout. I’d say Mission: Impossible 7 makes $240M DOM and $1.07B WW, becoming the first Paramount film since Transformers: Age of Extinction to hit $1B.
It’s a musical drama film directed by Kenneth Branagh and is based on Bee Gees, a music group. Bee Gees don't seem as popular in the modern era as a group like The Beatles or Queen. However, I think it would still do fine. I could see the film making $80M domestically and $180M worldwide, a little less than Rocketman.
It’s a period drama film directed by Damien Chazelle. Not much is known except that it takes place during the late 20s, when Hollywood is transitioning from silent films to talkies. Setting a film in Hollywood has been doing well recently, with hits like La La Land and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. If Babylon can capture the charm that one of those films had, I’d say this film makes $120M DOM and $360M WW.
Thoughts on the 2022 Slate - This honestly looks really good. This almost feels like Paramount could make a comeback. Having Scream, Jackass Forever, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Top Gun: Maverick, and Mission: Impossible 7 can definitely help Paramount cross the $1B mark domestically, the first time since 2014. However, I would’ve really liked for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts to release in 2022 instead of 2023, but it’s whatever. I haven’t heard much about Under the Boardwalk and Bee Gees, but I hope those films actually get made. The film slate is a solid 8/10.
The Future - Unlike every other studio, Paramount literally planned out their entire 2023 film slate and that looks really amazing as well. A Quiet Place spinoff, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Mission: Impossible 8, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Chapter, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and Star Trek 14 could be some of the biggest films of the year. Animated adaptations of The Tiger’s Apprentice and The Shrinking of Treehorn are being made. Paramount is trying to kickstart a Dungeons and Dragons franchise. John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds are teaming up to make a fantasy comedy film together. Maybe Paramount has a bright future ahead. I think Paramount is back. I just really hope they’re not bought up by another company, especially one that already owns a film studio.
2021.12.09 02:36 389Tman389Old Testament Biblical Scholarship
IntroMy current pet project was listening through a free yale bible course and looking at where the bible came from and exploring areas of biblical scholarship. From there I went down a major rabbit hole into various topics. I’m also looking at the New Testament, but I feel like I need to write down all the Old Testament stuff now before I move on and forget it. My goal is to fit as much of the relevant Old Testament scholarship as I can in this post, then wrap it up with a Part 2, followed by New Testament Scholarship in another, and finally I will use both of them to go through the different LDS works and teachings that relate to them. And I should add that I’m just trying to share what majority scholarship says. Anyways, here is what I've been able to fit in one post with a logical splitting point:
Two Creation Accounts?
Where else to start other than the beginning. Before getting into the weeds it’s a good idea to read Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 and pay attention to the order. Genesis 1’s order is Light and Dark, Firmament/Dividing Waters, Dry Land, Night and Day, Fish and Birds, Animals and Humans, and rest. Genesis 2’s order is Plants, Water, Man, Fish and birds and animals, and finally Woman. Now try as you might to explain it away, the order is different. Biblical Scholars have concluded that there are two creation accounts that were put together at some point. They come to this conclusion because Creation isn’t the only thing that happens twice, and when scholars took a step back they saw patterns between the various versions of the different stories.
Genesis 7:8-9 has Noah bring 2 of every animal whether clean or unclean, but just before that, Genesis 7:2 emphasized that there were 7 of every clean animal. There are also multiple accounts of Abraham calling Sarah his sister (Gen 12:13, 20:5), Multiple contradicting accounts of how Joseph got to Egypt (Gen 27:28,36), and Jacob is named Israel twice (Gen 32:28 and 35:10). These parallel stories and contradictions go all the way through the Pentateuch, and themes and specific styles begin to emerge.
The Four Sources
There are multiple theories about these sources, but the existence of multiple sources is not debated. Scholars will agree that there are multiple authors, Moses did not write it, and will have some form of the following four sources in their theories. I will be using quotes here, and throughout this post, from Dr. Christine Hayes Yale course on Hebrew Bible to explain these sources, but I highly recommend watching some of the videos I have linked.
First up is the J source:
“So the main characteristics of the J source, which begins with the second creation story, so the J source picks up in Genesis 2:4, second half of verse 4 are: (1) that it uses a personal name Yahweh for God from the time of creation, and that will be in your Bibles as “Lord”; (2) It describes God very anthropomorphically. It’s the J source that has God shut the door of the ark after Noah. It’s the J source that has God smelling the sacrifice after the Flood, the sacrifice that Noah offers. It’s in the J source that God eats with Abraham and bargains with him. It’s in the J source that God meets with Moses in this mysterious passage and tries to kill him one night; (3) J has a very vivid and concrete earthy style; and, (4) It uses the name Mount Sinai to refer to the place where the Israelites with Moses will conclude the covenant with God.”J is kind of confusing, as it would appear to make more sense as being the Y source. But this is where the origin of the name Jehovah should be discussed. To avoid saying God’s name too many times, scribes would give the vowels of a generic word for God to the consonants of Yahweh (YHW), and put the consonants for the generic word in the margin. For words that frequently occur they would forgo the consonants in the margins and the reader would just know that the vowels did not match and to read the generic word instead. That general word is Addonai, and if you put the vowels of Addonai with the consonants of Yahweh you get Yahovah, with the J being explained by the dominance of German biblical scholars at the time. Jehovah means something to us now, but the word has no meaning to those that wrote the bible.
Next is the E source:
“The E source, which source critics say begins around Genesis 15 is really the most fragmentary. It seems to have been used to supplement the J source rather than being used in a larger form. So sometimes it seems very difficult to isolate, and there’s a lot of debate over this, but the E source’s characteristics are that (1) it uses Elohim, again it’s a plural form of the word god or gods, but when it’s used with a singular verb it refers to the God of Israel; (2) it has a much less anthropomorphic view of God; (3) God is more remote. There aren’t the direct face-to-face revelations in the E source; most communications from the divine are indirect. They’ll be through messengers or dreams and; (4) there’s also an emphasis on prophets and prophecy in the E source. Miriam, Moses — they’re both referred to as prophets in the E source; (5) The style is more abstract, a little less picturesque, and; (6) the E source uses a different name for the mountain where the covenant was concluded. It uses the name Horeb.”And then the D Source which also consists of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings:
The main characteristic of D, however, which assisted source theorists in fixing its date, is the following: D is the one source in the Bible that clearly insists that one central sanctuary only is acceptable to Yahweh. God cannot be worshiped at makeshift altars. God cannot be worshipped through sacrifices at some local sanctuary; all sacrifices must be offered in the one central sanctuary where “he will cause his name to dwell.”Finally, the P source who is thought to have the last word:
P is the Priestly source, and that is found mostly in the books of Leviticus and the non-narrative portions of Numbers. Now the major characteristics of P, the Priestly source, are (1) a great concern with religious institutions, with the sacrificial system, with the Sabbath, with holidays, with rituals like circumcision, the Passover, dietary restrictions (the laws of kashrut) the system of ritual purity and impurity, and also holiness, ethical holiness and cultic or ritual holiness. P does have some narrative, and you’ve read some of it: Genesis 1, the first creation account, is attributed to P. It’s orderly, it’s systematized, the god is extraordinarily abstract. Because in the P source another characteristic is that; (2) God is transcendent, and even perhaps remote, much more so than in [E], for example. Generally in the P source, God is concealed and revealed only in his kavod. This is a word that’s often translated as “glory,” but what it refers to actually is a light-filled cloud. God seems to be the burning fire inside this light-filled cloud. He travels before the Israelites in that form, leading them through the wilderness and so on. That seems to be in the P source. P is also; (3) interested in covenants, in censuses, in genealogies. Now one important thing to note about these sources is that dating them is fairly complex. First there is the topic that the pentateuch wasn’t compiled until There isn’t one specific date that they were written from start to finish. And if there was a point in which that did happen, it was edited over time. That’s why there is such a wide range of dates associated with the sources. J and E are thought to be earlier because of their context, but that does not mean that a redactor closer to the compilation didn’t change anything. D leads up to the exile so you can sort of date that one, but it has elements of older stories incorporated as well. P appears to be the latest if for no other reason than the redactor appears to be from P and there are post 586 BCE themes. And scholars don’t even agree on the dating, but we are talking about trying to push the sources further past 586 BCE, not before 1000 BCE.
Genesis 1
With all of that background out of the way we can finally look at Genesis 1. In doing so we need to look at the Enuma Elish. In this Babylonian Epic, in the beginning there is nothing but water. Marduk fights Tiamat, a sea monster, and defeats her. He then slices her carcass in half to create the firmament, or heaven, and the earth. The top part is pushing back the waters above, and the bottom part is holding in the waters below. The gods are amoral and one can be thwarted by another. Humans are unimportant and the purpose on Earth is to serve the current god in power.
In short, Genesis 1 is a deliberate rejection of the theological points in the Enuma Elish. God is universally moral. Humans are greatly important. And humans serve the universally powerful God. The purpose of Genesis 1 is to incorporate the surrounding myths so that they can be theologically rejected. From the Yale course:
And you should immediately hear the great similarities. Our story opens with a temporal clause: “When on high,” “when God began creating”; we have a wind that sweeps over chaotic waters, just like the wind of Marduk released into the face of Tiamat, and the Hebrew term is particularly fascinating. In fact, the text says “and there is darkness on the face of deep.” No definite article. The word “deep” is a proper name, perhaps. The Hebrew word is Tehom. It means “deep” and etymologically it’s exactly the same word as Tiamat: the “at” ending is just feminine. So Tiam, Tehom — it’s the same word, it’s a related word. So, the wind over the face of deep, now it’s demythologized, so it’s as if they’re invoking the story that would have been familiar and yet changing it. So the storyteller has actually set the stage for retelling the cosmic battle story that everyone knew. That was a story that surely was near and dear to the hearts of many ancient Israelites and Ancient Near Eastern listeners, so all the elements are there for the retelling of that story. We’ve got wind, we’ve got a primeval chaotic, watery mass or deep, and then surprise, there’s no battle. There’s just a word, “let there be light.” And the Ancient Near Eastern listener would prick up their ears: where’s the battle, where’s the violence, where’s the gore? I thought I knew this story. So something new, something different was being communicated in this story. And
And he follows that initial ordering by setting up celestial bodies, just as Marduk did. They’re not in themselves, however, divinities: they are merely God’s creations. In the biblical text, the firmament appears to be a beaten, the word in Hebrew is something that’s been beaten out, like a metal worker would hammer out a thin sheet of metal. And that’s what the firmament [pointing at blackboard] this by the way is the portrait of the world; it looks a lot like my map of the Ancient Near East, but it’s not. So you have this firmament, which is beaten back to hold back primeval waters that are pressing in; you have land which is holding down the waters here. We inhabit the bubble that’s created in that way. That’s the image in Enuma Elish and it’s the image of Genesis 1.As one last point for Genesis 1, there is the origin of adam in Genesis 1. It’s not a proper name. Genesis 1 says that God created “the adam” and not “Adam”. It comes from the word “adamah” which means ground or earth. There’s further no gender involved. When looking at Genesis 1 without any outside religious explanation you would determine that the adam is both male and female, and the adam was created in the image of god, indicating a belief that God either wasn’t gendered or was both genders.
Genesis 2
Next we can look at Genesis 2. Similarly to Genesis 1, Genesis 2 is commentary and rejection of the ideas of an earlier work. This time the work is the Mesopotamean Epic of Gilgamesh with fragments of the story found dating back to around 2000-1800 BCE. The basic outline is that there is an unpopular king named Gilgamesh. A naive human named Enkidu is created. Enkidu lives in peace with the animals until a woman comes and makes him spiritually like God through sexual initiation. Then Enkidu loses his harmonious relationship with the animals. They run away from him and he can no longer keep up. Eventually to the devastation of Gilgamesh, Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh accepts the reality of mortality.
There are many similarities in the texts, and more importantly there are also rejections or reversals of the story. Adam and Enkidu are created out of clay. They are naked and innocent, living in peace with nature. They both are said to have become like God, and both must come to terms with mortality. The biblical author is purposefully incorporating the ideas of the Epic of Gilgamesh and repurposing or rejecting them. For example in the Yale course:
So maybe what we have here is another polemic, another adaptation of familiar stories and motifs to express something new. Perhaps for the biblical writer, Adam and Eve’s transformation occurs after an act of disobedience, not after a seven-day sexual encounter. The Epic of Gilgamesh is further commented on in the Flood myth, but first there is an interesting point on the details of how the fruit was eaten. From the course:
But in fact the Hebrew literally reads, “She took of its fruit and ate and gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.” “With her” is a very teeny-tiny little word in Hebrew, so I guess a lot of translations figure they can leave it out. But the “with her” is there in the Hebrew. At that fateful moment, Adam and Eve are standing together at the tree, and although only the woman and the serpent speak, Adam was present, and it seems he accepted the fruit that his wife handed him. He was fully complicitous, and indeed God holds him responsible.Flood Myths
Like the creation account, the flood account appears to be an incorporation of and rejection of neighboring ideas. In the mesopotamian myths the god’s actions are spontaneous, and the gods can and are thwarted by each other. Genesis rejects these ideas insisting that God had a moral reason, and was completely unthreatened as he carried out his plan with clear purpose.
Here is the context of the flood myth in the Epic of Gilgamesh:
in his search for immortality Gilgamesh sought out Utnapishtim, the one human who had been granted immortality. He wants to learn his secret. And when he begs for the secret of eternal life he gets Utnapishtim’s story, and it’s the flood story. He learns that Utnapishtim and his wife gained their immortality by a twist of circumstances: they were the sole survivors of this great flood, and as a kind of reward they were given immortality. And here is the story of Ziusudra that has striking parallels:
The Sumerian story of Ziusudra is very similar to the Genesis account. In both you have the flood coming about as the deliberate result of a divine decision; you have one individual who’s chosen to be saved from the flood; that individual is given specific instructions on building an ark, and is given specific instructions on who to bring on-board the ark. The ark also comes to rest on a mountaintop, the hero sends out a bird to reconnoiter the land, to find out if it’s dry yet. When the hero emerges he builds an altar. He offers sacrifice to the deity and receives a blessing. Very similar, parallel stories, and yet there are significant contrasts between the Mesopotamian story and its Israelite adaptation.Tower of Babel
The Tower of Babel performs two functions. First, it explains why there are so many diverse cultures with different languages when everyone came from a single ancestor. Second, it explains why God started to focus on just one group in one land. Scholars have identified the tower as a ziggurat to Marduk in Babylon. Bavel further means “Gate of the God” in Hebrew, and in Hebrew there is a similarly pronounced word balbel which has the same word play as babble in English. The story has a satirical tone and hostility towards Babylon, something important to later Israelites as Babylon will destroy Jerusalem in 586. The story is sort of blaming the Babylonians for the current state of the world.
In short, the Tower of Babel story is only necessary to explain the gap between the previous accounts and the reality of the world. It explains that plot hole, but that plot hole only exists because the biblical writers were incorporating other cultures mythology to depict their theological views. There's also a lot of suspiciously ideal numbers in the accounts. There’s a lot of fives, sevens, and multiples of them. Combine that with the multiple contradicting sources and you come to the conclusion the bible isn’t even trying to come off as an actual history. In this sense biblical scholars don’t see a historically accurate depiction of a Tower of Babel story as being necessary or even claimed from the text. You can safely say scholarly consensus (at least a large majority) is that the Tower of Babel story is mythological.
Here’s a good quote from the Yale course:
Many fear that if the historical information in the Bible isn’t true, then the Bible is unreliable as a source of religious instruction or inspiration. And that’s something they don’t want to give up. This is all really a very unfortunate and heavy burden to place on this fascinating little library of writings from late antiquity. People who equate truth with historical fact will certainly end up viewing the Bible dismissively, as a naïve and unsophisticated web of lies, since it is replete with elements that cannot be literally true. But to view it this way is to make a genre mistake.Shakespeare’sHamlet, while set in Denmark, an actual place, is not historical fact. But that doesn’t make it a naïve and unsophisticated web of lies, because we accept when we read or watch Hamlet that it is not a work of historiography, a work of writing about history.Abraham
There’s much reason to believe that the story of Abraham is more myth than reality. The story is filled with anachronisms and confused chronology indicating the stories we have in the bible were compiled at a later date. There are also many discrepancies between the archeological record and the biblical account. Seeing the nature of the earlier writing this would make Abraham fit right in.
There is, however, reason to believe that an Abraham could have lived sometime in the distant past. The origin story of Abraham is inconvenient as being a foreigner doesn’t establish a strong claim to the land. Further, Jacob is married to two sisters simultaneously which is forbidden in deuteronomy which would be quite offensive to later writers. The story also does not match the realities of post 1000 BC relations with neighboring groups. Archeology has also dated the names Benjamin, Laban, and Ishmael to around 1800 BCE, and has positively identified the home of the patriarchs before 2000 BCE.The basic conclusion is that Abraham technically could have lived, but the stories about him are certainly not historical. There are many stories about Abraham in antiquity and Abraham appears to be a popular character for driving theological points across. In the bible Abraham has the Abrahamic covenant, which is the moral justification for Israel’s claim to the land. There is no necessary reason for Abraham to be historical in the context of the Hebrew bible for this reason. From the Yale course:
And it looks very much like an Ancient Near Eastern suzerainty covenant. God appears as a suzerain. He’s making a land grant to a favored subject, which is very often how these work. And there’s an ancient ritual that ratifies the oath. In general, in this kind of covenant, the parties to the oath would pass between the split carcass of a sacrificial animal as if to say that they agree they will suffer the same fate as this animal if they violate the covenant. In Genesis 15, Abraham cuts sacrificial animals in two and God, but only God, passes between the two halves.Moses
The historicity of Moses and the Exodus is something that has been debated. As a good summary:
Some point to the presence of Egyptian names, and customs, and religious beliefs and laws as a sign of some historical memory being preserved in these stories. Others point to all the problems: the anachronisms, the general lack of specificity as a sign that these are composed quite lateMore specifically to the Exodus:
So none of this, of course, corroborates the specific details of the biblical story. There’s no Egyptian record of the biblical Moses, no record of plagues, no record of a defeat of Pharaoh’s army. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence, and some scholars think that that lends plausibility to a story of slaves working on building projects who escape from Egypt at this time, and if there’s any historical basis to the Exodus, then the most plausible time, the most plausible backdrop would be the thirteenth century BCE. Some scholars assume there’s a historical memory behind the elaborate and dramatic story of a miraculous redemption by God. Why would you invent a hero, a national hero who’s entirely Egyptian and has an Egyptian name? Why would you invent a myth of origins in which your ancestors are slaves? What is obvious, however, is that there are a lot of literary elements being used in the Moses story. Much of the Exodus story comes from P, and the Priestly writers have Moses born to a priestly Levite family. There are also literary allusions to his life:
The basket in which he is placed is called an ark: the Hebrew word is tevah. This word is used precisely twice in the entire Hebrew Bible. It’s not the same word that’s used for Ark of the Covenant, by the way: the Ark of the Covenant, the word is aron. This word for ark, tevah, occurs exactly twice: here, and in the story of Noah’s ark. Moreover, the basket is placed among the reeds — the Hebrew word for reeds is suph — and that’s a hint or an allusion to the fact that Moses will lead the Israelites through the “Reed Sea,” the Yam Suph. It’s not the Red Sea, it’s the Reed Sea, but we’ll talk about that later also.As for the exodus narrative itself, there are plenty of literary devices being used. The contest with the priests is a common literary device and part of the high drama and folklore elements found in the narrative. The plagues are also distributed in three sets of three, with each set of three following the same structure. These 9 plagues culminate into the climax of the 10th plague. The text also challenges and rejects the idea of Baal’s power by the way it describes Yahweh. Baal is the Canaanite storm god that defeated El. Similar to the storm God Marduk in the Enuma Ailish that defeated Tiamat. The biblical author is incorporating these stories once again to reject them and repurpose them into Israelite theology. Similarly, they are rejecting the idea of any other God having power, and this is essentially the origin of the Yahweh only movement.
This is where Israel’s concept of God needs to be addressed. To put it bluntly, all indications point to the early Israelites worshipping the Canaanite God El. This is something the different sources tried to address differently. The J source insists that ever since Genesis 4:24 the name Yahweh was known and worshipped. Meanwhile, P in Exodus 6:2-4 says God was once El Shaddai but is now Yahweh. Both are trying to combat the problem of continuity, the P source draws attention to the fundamental discontinuity.
There are plenty of references to El:
God is six times called El Shaddai. Other names are El ‘Elyon, and El Olam, El Ro’i, El Beyt El. You can see the translations of these: the everlasting God, God most high, the God of seeing, the God of the house of God, and so on.And you can see the change play out in the bible:
Many personal and place names in the patriarchal narratives are compounds in which one element is El. Israel, Ishmael, Beth-el. El is the God of the Patriarchs. By contrast, after the time of Moses, Israelite names start to be formed using Yah, or Yahu, as part of the name Yahweh: Elijah in Hebrew is Eliyahu. So you start to have theophorics, names that use a name of a deity, which are using forms of Yahu instead of ElAnd you can see the characterization like Baal:
Like Baal, Yahweh is said to ride on the clouds: we have a poetic passage in which that’s the case. His revelations are accompanied by thunderstorms, earthquakes: Baal is the god of the storm. There are poetic fragments also that allude to Yahweh’s victory over water foes, and that is a motif that’s associated with Baal, who does battle with the Yam, with the sea. And finally, also associated with Israel’s God, we have Ancient Near Eastern holy war traditions. God is depicted as a warrior, who leads his host [he’s], the Lord of hosts in battle. He’s armed with spear and bow and arrows. This confrontation with other Gods and the idea of serving Yahweh instead of the God’s previously served is the context for Joshua 24:
There’s an interesting passage in the book of Joshua, Joshua 24:14-15. Joshua was the successor to Moses. He presents the Israelites with the following choice: “Now therefore revere the Lord,” using the word Yahweh, “revere Yahweh, and serve him with undivided loyalty. Put away the gods that your forefathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt” — put away the gods your forefathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt — “and serve Yahweh. / Choose this day which ones you are going to serve, but I in my household will serve Yahweh,” serve the LordOne of the most known elements of the Moses story is the introduction of the ten commandments. Thinking about the existence of J, E, P, and D it is perfectly logical that we have multiple sets of contradicting ten commandments. The generally accepted 10 commandments occurs in Exodus 20, but there are also accounts of them in Exodus 34 and Deuteronomy 5. Exodus 34:1 also explicitly says God wrote the same words on the tablets, indicating that they should in fact be the exact same as the first ones written in Exodus 20. A similar reasoning is given in Deuteronomy 10. Later in the Old Testament, the ten commandments are even challenged. Exodus 20:5 speaks of God punishing multiple generations, but Ezekiel for example rejects this idea.
The Law code revealed to Moses is also being used as a literary device to again reject the surrounding beliefs. Other Ancient Near Eastern Laws had God commission a man to write them, but the bible makes sure to indicate it is from God. The codes are similar to and influenced by other older law codes such as the Code of Hammurabi, but the Law of Moses includes laws only God can enforce and laws related strictly to religion.
Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings
I’m including Joshua through Kings here because the authors of the D source had influence on these as well. They may have been written earlier, but the D source recontextualized the works and redacted them. This is something else about the authorship of the bible that makes dating the works so hard. The sources were not compiled until sometime after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. So despite their age, much of the final form we have has been influenced by and repurposed for a post 586 BCE worldview. The Book of Joshua through Samuel is a history of how we got to this point. And as such it is apparent that much of these books are not even trying to be historical.
The depiction of Joshua’s conquest does not even match the Book of Judges as Judges 1 identifies cities that should have been conquered but were not. Further, it’s apparent in later books that the Caananites still exist, something that should not be the case if the conquest was historically accurate. Joshua is also a literary clone of Moses. He parts the Jordan River, renews the covenant, takes off his sandals because he is on Holy Ground, and they hold up a rod or staff in the air to assure Israel’s victory in battle.
Judges has been repurposed to comment on a few topics important in the time of the authors of D. The cycle of sin, punishment, repentance, and deliverance is a recurring pattern. Samson is ultimately taken down by intermarriage, a hot topic after 586 BCE. Gideon is also known by the name Jerubbaal, which is an incorporation or repurposing of a story originally about Baal.
Samuel is quite interesting to me. Taken at face value, the story goes that one day there is this really popular righteous King named Saul. And now he and his sons are dead and David is the legitimate king. Samuel is a Near Eastern Literary genre called an apology. The book explains why Saul lost favor with God, and even cites criticisms for things that many Kings including David do in the future. The book further explains how David was completely loyal to Saul, didn’t want Saul to die, and even spared his life. David was absolutely innocent. It was God who had David be king.
The main people to talk about in Kings are Elijah and Elisha. There are a lot of elements of folklore in Kings, but they were kept and used for the purposes of the authors of D. Elijah’s battle with the prophets of Baal is a great example of this. The purpose of this story is to show that Yahweh, not Baal, controls the rain. There is lots of satire against the priests of Baal, and language usually depicting Baal is once again used to describe Yahweh. What further emphasizes this is that Elijah’s name means “My God is Yahweh”. Elijah is further depicted as being like Moses, as he parts water, spends 40 days at Sinai or Horeb, and he hides himself in a rocky area where he will later see God.
Elijah and Elisha are similar and thought to potentially be the same person, or perhaps more accurately to be the one attributed to the same stories:
That this material began as a set of folk stories is also suggested by the fact that there’s a great deal of overlap in the depiction of the activities of the two prophets. So you have both of the prophets multiplying food, both of them predict the death of Ahab’s queen, Queen Jezebel. Both of them part water and so on.
Summary
- The Pentateuch and Deuterocanonicals (Genesis-Kings) were slowly written by multiple authors over a long period of time. Each has their own theological agenda. Ultimately the Pentateuch was compiled sometime after 539 BCE. The sources are J, E, D, and P. Scholars agree on P, not P (E/J), and D but do not agree on dates or how exactly they came to existence.
- Genesis 1 is an incorporation and reversal of the themes of the Enuma Eilish
- Genesis 2 is an incorporation and reversal of the themes of the Epic of Gilgamesh
- Noah’s ark is an incorporation and reversal of Mesopotamean Flood myths such as the Epic of Gilgamesh and Ziusudra
- The Tower of Babel is the literary tool to connect a universal world to God only being involved with the Israelites.
- Abraham may have existed, but the stories we have of him are not intended to be historical and he is portrayed as a legendary figure.
- Moses may have existed, but the stories we have of him are not written in a historical way and he is portrayed as a legendary figure.
- Samuel through Kings were incorporated by the D source to get across their theological views. For example the push for a central place of worship in Jerusalem, and Yahweh only worship.
- David's story is the genre of Apology, explaining how he came to power by God’s favor and had nothing to do with the previous king's death.

2021.12.09 02:35 389Tman389Old Testament Biblical Scholarship

Written down by the first hand accounts of Venetian ex-Gesuit Priest, Giulio Clemente Scotti, S.J. published anonymously under the pseudonym “Lucii Cornelii Europaei.” Under the command of Gesuit Superior General, Vincenzo Carafa, S.J., the Roman Inquisition (reestablished by the Gesuits in 1542) were immediately ordered to place this book on the Congregation of the Index, for exposing the Order’s greatest secrets. They falsely attributed Hungarian Gesuit Priest, Melchior Inchofer, S.J. for writing it, but later dismissed him. The book was not seen ever again, until over 100 years in 1753-54 in French, only after the Order had been suppressed by the Supreme Court of France. It has to this day never fully been translated into English, and for good reason… UNDERSTAND: This word“Solipsorum”(Latin for:Solipses) was the first time it was ever used. In 1645 Giulio Clemente Scotti, S.J., was brought to the point of having to invent an entirely new word in order to be able to describe the Gesuit Order, because no others words were capable. Solipsetymologically became the root for another new word which emerged later on, that being“Ego.”Does someone have an ego? They have the spirit of a Gesuit. “The Origins and Historical Development of the Term ‘Solipsism’—The development of the term ‘Solipsism’ is closely related to the development of a group of other terms like ‘Egotism,’ ‘Egoism,’ and ‘Egomism.’ These words are relatively young and have emerged during the Enlightenment. In this period of philosophical innovation many neologisms were formed. Traditional philosophical terms are: ego, individualitas, and persona. Terms derived from Mysticism and rediscovered by the French Quietists seem to have been particularly attractive: the prefix ‘ego’ and suffixes like ‘ismus’ and ‘-ista.’ Some of these words found general acceptance. Important to us are: Solipsism and Egoism. The current general and internationally accepted meaning of these concepts emerged relatively late. Until the second half of the 19th century, the situation is unclear and we find big differences per country. All this indicates that the problem of Solipsism in the History of Philosophy arose very late. It's a philosophical position that apparently only recently entered the discourse. The term ‘Solipsism’ is probably formed from ‘Solipsus’ (Solis = only, ipse = self) which means ‘Selfish.’ This word is itself a Neologism, and to my knowledge it does not occur before 1645 when it was first mentioned in a work entitled ‘Lucii Cornelii Europaei Monarchia Solipsorum’ by [Gesuit Priest] Giulio Scotti. It is an expose on the Jesuits, and describes a realm of the selfish. ‘Solipsus’ is probably formed by analogy with Latin terms like ‘philautia’ and ‘autophilia’ with the meaning: selfish. The Greek ‘Philautos’ in the sense of ‘Selfish’ is already found in the Koine and occurs for instance in the New Testament. In 1652 the work of Scotti was translated in France as ‘La Monarchie des Solipses’ and soon the term ‘Solipsistes’ found entrance. What was going in France at the time exactly is difficult to reconstruct. There are several theses: (A.) ‘Solipsist' was a byword for Jesuit, (Roll.); (B.) There really has been a ‘sect’ of Solipsists, (Mencke, Wolff); (C.) It is a nick name of the Jesuits for the followers of Descartes and Malebranche, (Vaihinger).”—Pieter W. However, here a generation is 100 years (4×100 = 400 years). However, the average of these two, 70 years, is on occasion also found in the Psalm 90:10. But ‘70 years’ is a generation according to the average age of a man at his death, rather then when his first child is born (as with the example of Abraham). 40+100 = 140, 140÷2 = 70. A generation in the Bible is primarily the age of a man when his first male child is born; but secondarily, the age of a man at his death. The Bible then rounds the exact span of years in a ‘generation’ to be 40 and 100 years as the primary usage, but on occasion, ‘70 years.’ And 70 is the average of 40 and 100, which allow the three time frames to work in numeric harmony to produce the numeric symmetry found throughout the Bible. The usage of the 100-year generation predominates in the bible prior to the time of Moses when men lived longer, but 40 years after Moses. A generation of 70 years is also inferred in the Book of Enoch and Jubilees, and is highly compatible with the jubilee system of the Bible itself, Daniel 9. Significantly, king David died at age 70, and reigned 40 years. Biblical Generation × Length Azaz’el Bound: Book of Enoch Written:

2021.11.14 15:46 shrinpo[PC] - [Steam] - [Age - 18+] [GMT] Looking for players to helps me complete the game. [PVE]
I have had Ark for a long time now but never beaten the game properly and moved from one map to the next. So I decided that I want to do this and finally complete the game before Ark 2 gets released. I know I most likely have a lot of time as no real date has been announced, but still, I would like to have it complete before then.
I am wondering if anyone out there is willing to help me with this, I have a rough idea of what I need to do, As in what Dino's need to be tamed, what I need to breed and get mutation on for boss fights, however its just time and it taking forever with just myself.
I don't want anyone joining telling me what to do, I would like a person or a few people to help in doing things together to get it done a bit faster and make the Artifact cave and boss fight a tiny bit easier. I don't mind being given advice on how to do things better or to say that will not work because of this and that as that helps me understand the game better.
I have servers set up for all the maps that are relevant (Offical maps)
The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis Part 1 & Genesis Part 2
All servers/maps are running the below settings and mods
Settings
4 x Taming & 2 x Harvest
Mods
Structures Plus (S+), Ark Additions: Domination Rex, Death Recovery Mod, Upgrade Station, Ultra Stacks, Eco's Empires - Vikings, Addition Emotes, Dino Storage v2, Crafting Skill Potion & Super Spyglass Plus
If anyone is interested let me know via PM.
Thanks to anyone that reads and would like to help me in my Ark adventure.

2021.08.15 07:46 ZequenimGap Theory Final
An intriguing assertion to bridge the gap of understanding of there can “nothing new under the sun” is “The Gap Theory a.k.a Ruin and Reconstruction Theory', or that mankind, humans is a new creation to reseed the cosmos after a cataclysmic conflict. That is coinciding with a new line of thinking that Earth is truly unique being flat like an artificial “space station” of sorts akin to “The Ark” in the Bungie’s Halo. This means flat earth is reconcilable in a universe of spherical planets as is unique proof of the hand of a creator as nothing else is like the “Earth”.
Quoting: CK QUARTERMAN
The annihilation ofLucifer’s home,Rahab, isn’t in the shared consciousness or memory of humanity. It happened
(In Soviet/Russian scientific literature 'Rahab' is called Phaeton)
The Late Heavy Bombardment Period was a time approximately 4.1 to 3.8 billion years ago during which a large number ofimpact craterswere formed on theMoon, and by inference onEarth, Mercury,Venus, andMarsas well from the break up of Rahab. The evidence for this event comes from the dating of lunar samples, which indicates that most impact rocks formed in this rather narrow interval of time. Extrapolating lunar cratering rates to Earth at this time suggest the following: 22,000 or more impact craters with diameters of more than 20 miles, about 40 impact basins with diameters about 1000 miles, several impact basins with diameters about 5,000 miles, such as theCaribbean.
Oursolar systemwas damaged beyond any self-repair. Earth alone received 22,000 impact craters, and several craters had diameters larger than 5,000 miles. What we now know as theCaribbean Seais in actuality an impact crater from this time. It was by means of these great rocks of Rahab that Earth became a formless void and thesolar systemdamaged.
With Lucifer’s and the fallen angels’ rebellion, death and corruption began to invade the planets, and this dimension, which was under Lucifer’s rule, was judged, and the whole of the cosmos and all things in it began to decay.
Because he was the Prince of this physical cosmos, all things under his rule were subjected to corruption and death.
The planets beneath his control had the judgment of death and corruption pronounced upon them, and they were subjected to casualty, vice, and eventual death.
Scientists Find Evidence of a Giant Planet (Rahab) That Existed in Solar System
The consensus among astronomers, according to the Daily Mail is that thesolar systemhas always had four giant planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. But now it’s claimed that it’s much more likely to have been home to a fifth giant planet that is no longer in the Solar System.Computer simulations by theSouthwest Research Institutein San Antonio, Texas, show that it is statistically extremely unlikely that thesolar systembegan with four giants. By its calculations, it only had a 2.5 per cent chance of reaching its current population and orbital layout with four giants, but was 10 times more likely to have developed to its present state if there was a fifth monster body in the mix. To reach his conclusions David Nesvorny at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas ran 6,000 simulations of thesolar system’s birth and early development.
Rahab was once a planet like ours, orbiting the sun. It was larger than the Earth, more along the lines of Saturn. Its name means boaster or pride. Its mass was large enough to hold tenEarths, and its orbit was nearly circular. The remains of Rahab are now the asteroid belt.
From Earth Rahab would be bright enough to be seen in the daytime, and would have dominated the night sky, hence where the name Lucifer as light bearer may have gotten its origin. The planet was solid, because diamonds bearing carbonaceous asteroids appear as the debris of its destruction. The planet was very likely a water-bearing planet since a high percentage of water is seen in comets.
Pre- Adamite
The Bible does reveal that there was a pre-historic time period before Adam that involved a revolt of Lucifer and a judgment that came upon the earth because of his fall (Rev 12:9). It is also very likely that this was the dinosaur age and that this revolt is what brought about these great pre-historic extinctions. A Great worldwide flood of judgment from God, similar to Noah’s flood, engulfed the world. We see this inGenesis 1:2. “And the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep”. God then re-created the earth, and made man. According toGenesis 1:28Adam and Eve were told to “replenish” the earth meaning that the earth had been previously inhabited, the Hebrew word for “replenish” is the same word that God used when Hecommanded Noah to replenish the earth inGenesis 9:1. On that basis then, it is true thatGenesis 1:28also means “replenish”.Jeremiah describes a time when the earth was “without form, and void,” not even Noah’s flood was as horrific, or brought about such barren conditions as described by Jeremiah. It can only be the cataclysmic destruction by God of the Pre-Adamic world.Isaiah 45:18states that God did not create the earth “in vain”, but to be inhabited and so I believe the originally created earth, was perfect until judgment as seen in the second verse.
This teaching is sometimes called the “Gap Theory” because it reveals that something catastrophic happened on the earth, between the first two verses of Genesis, possibly millions of years. However, I believe this teaching also agrees with God’s restoration of the earth for Adam, in a literal six-day period.
Jeremiah 4:23-27“I looked on the earth, and beheld it formless (laid waste) and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and, behold, they quaked. And all the hills were shaken”.I beheld and lo, there was no man (Adams); and all the cover of the skies had fled. I looked, and, behold, the fruitful place was a wilderness; and all its cities were broken down before the face of Jehovah, before his glowing anger. For so Jehovah has said. The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.
There was no man, (descendants of Adam), yet there were cities which were destroyed by God’s wrath – who dwelt in these cities?
Isaiah 14:12-17“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”Satan is portrayed as ruler of the nations on earth and this passage shows that there were nations of people inhabiting earth at the time of Satan’s rebellion. The phrase, “which didst weaken the nations,” makes this quite clear. Thus both Jeremiah and Isaiah confirm this Pre-Adamic world that “then was”. It can be gathered that before Adam, civilizations of angels existed on the earth and also perhaps on the other terrestrial planets. Satan was destroyed from the midst of the “stones of fire “, i.e.: the planets. We may find evidence of this in such places as the Cydonia section of Mars. One of the more interesting trips we could take is the legend of the destroyed plant Rahab which is thought to have been the home of an angelic civilization, perhaps Satan’s home world. It is thought to have been the fifth planet out, where the asteroid belt is now located.
Job 26:11-13:“The pillars of heaven are stunned at His rebuke. He quiets The sea with his power, and by his understanding He shatters (maw-khats, dashes asunder), Rahab, by His spirit the heavens were beautiful; His hand forbids the fugitive snake.”On earth the same judgments are taking place, God is destroying cities created before there was Adam.Rahab means boaster or pride.
Psalm 89:10“You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one slain: you have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm”.To quote another author, “The planet of the “Covering Cherub” is still evident within the debris, asteroids and comets, which are strewn throughout our solar system. Significantly, these chunks of the rebel angel’s planet, cosmic stones, have been used to mete out God’s judgment throughout history. God’s judgment on the rebels continued, as the incomprehensibly violent and genetically unlikely dinosaurs, the very image of the dragon, “that old serpent”, were destroyed with another chunk of the rebel cherub’s planet. “
When did this entire judgment take place, approximately 500 to 700 million years ago? It also might be of note that we do not see any mention of the creation of hell in the book of Genesis or the Bible, why, because it was created in this pre-Adamic time when Lucifer fell.
Hebrew Cosmogony
Earth were changed in catastrophe, before the birth of our world, worlds were shaped and brought into existence, only to be destroyed in the course of time:ii “Nor is this world inhabited by man the first of things earthly created by God. He made several worlds before ours, but he destroyed them all.” Hebrew mythology assigns to this period before Adam different geophysical catastrophes. Hebrew tradition also, estimates that the population of the ante-diluvian world was in the millions.
Antediluvian
Satan’s fall was before Adam because when he approached Adam and Eve, he was already a fallen angel and had to use the body of a snake tempting them. Again, the only possible explanation is that his fall was before the re-creation of the earth for Adam otherwise, why it is not recorded as having happened during Adam’s time.
The word antediluvian or Prediluvian (Latin for “before the deluge”) speaks of a time period that preceded the Flood of Noah. People lived much longer as seen in the genealogies of some of the people of this period, as mentioned in Genesis, some 700-1000. It is thought that the Earth contained many people, perhaps as many as 500 million as calculated by Whiston an English theologian, historian, and mathematician who wrote in 1752.
One of the interesting and most overlooked facts is that there was no rain. Rather, the ground was watered by mists which rose up from the Earth and became dew upon the ground.
This era is spoken of as a time of great wickedness. There were Nephilim (Giants) , and Genesis calls them the “heroes of old, men of renown;” Nephilim literally means ‘fallen ones’, and is from the Hebrew root word n-f-l ‘to fall’. These are the mythical creatures of the Greeks and Romans, the Titans of times past. These Giants will reappear even after the Flood as seen inNumbers 13:31-33.
What should we say about Cain’s wife’s origins? Cain’s wife and the inhabitants of Cain’s city must have come from pre-Adamic beings that had lived in some vague amount of time before Adam or perhaps even from a competing creation of Lucifer.
Genesis. 1.2
The Earth is a dead and desolate planet drifting in the freezing cold and shadows of the chaotic remains of the previous cosmos. Life on this planet perished near the Younger-Dryas marker. The angle of the axis of the earth apparently used to be perpendicular, straight up and down but the earth axis has been shifted to an angel do to cataclysmic changes which we took place beforeGen. 1.2with the fall of Lucifer.
God created and destroyed an ancient civilization on earth eons before the time of Adam. A pre-Adamite society did exist at one time, although the Bible says nothing about when this took place. This explains the questions concerning the earth’s geological age. The age geologists give to the earth is easily explained by this “gap”. There were humanoid creatures, called ‘pre-Adamites’, living on Earth before God created Adam.
Adam’s linage began as farmers and herdsmen after the fall (Cain & Able). The first indication of “hunting” does not appear in the Bible until after Noah’s flood (Gen. 10:9). It was not the descendants of Adam who hunted the mammoths. Those who did so were a race of humanoid beings which were on the earth before Adam. This is where Cain’s wife came from and the cities mentioned that Cain fled to.
These Pre-Adamites, a race of humanoids known as Neanderthals lived before Adam. They have no DNA link to man. Neanderthals DNA shows no genetic link between modern man and themselves some 6,000 years and older. Remains of this age are Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon. There is scientific evidence that these Neanderthals (humanoids) and Dinosaurs could have lived on the earth at the same time. There have been archeological finds in which dinosaur and pre-Adamite footprints are seen in the same sedimentary rock.
The Talmudic-rabbinical tradition believes that before Adam was created, the world was once inhabited and then destroyed. The fossil record shows examples of cannibalism, violence, scalping and disease, including syphilis in the Pre-Adamite race. This is due to the fact that sin had entered the world with Lucifer’s rebellion. This would be near the Younger-Dryas geological marker. Wonder why God created a garden?
With Lucifer’s rebellion, death and corruption began to pervade the cosmos under Lucifer’s rule. Because Lucifer was the ruler of the whole creation under heaven, when he was cut down, all things were subjected to corruption and death. The ancient cosmos had the judgment of death upon it. Over the geologic ages, the universe and all things in it began to decay. Our scientists use the term “Evolution” to describe what they observe as “decay” of ancient life forms as discovered in the fossil record. Evolution is the term we use to describe the decay of life forms in the Pre-Adamite world which began at the geological Younger-Dryas marker.
Romans 5:12reads: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”This passage does not prove there was no death in the world before Adam sinned. It does not rule out a Pre-Adamite world and its subsequent destruction. It merely means that Adam brought sin and death to himself and his offspring — but nothing is said about any Pre-Adamite beings that may have existed before Adam. The Greek word translated here as world is kosmos, defined means the earth and its inhabitants. In other words, kosmos is defined as “people” or “social system.” Adam caused sin and death in our world or social system of humanity, but it has no relevance whatsoever in regards to another world or social system of Pre-Adamites or humanoids (Neanderthals lived before Adam) who were not offspring of Adam. “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (I Cor. 15:21-22). Again, this scriptural passage does not prohibit the creation and destruction of a Pre-Adamite world; it simply states that Adam brought sin and death to humanity.
Modern Man, made in the image of God, has only been on the Earth about 6,000 years. He is a created creature, he did not evolve. Evolution played no part in his creation, but evolution did play a part in the Pre-Adamite world.
Although Adam was preceded by “humanoids” closely resembling Adam’s, Adam’s distinctiveness is defined as a creation in the “image of God”. Adam’s exceptionality was in respect to him being made in the image of God. A soul is the interface between that which is spiritual and that which is physical. The spirit and soul is a part of a person that gives animation, personality and literally life to the physical body. It is the part of a person which departs when we refer to a person as deceased. When I was a little boy my parents took me to my first funeral and as it was our custom in the South, we all lined up and walked by viewing the body in the casket. The thought came to my mind and embedded itself that this man was no longer home. That there was a body lying there but nobody was at home. Adam was told to “replenish” the Earth (Genesis 1:28), which indicates that Adam and consequently man, was to replace the “Pre-Adamite humanoids” of the ancient creation. These “humanoids” obviously had a physical form biologically very analogous to Adam in bodily composition, but not in spirit, which is defined as being “after our (the Trinity’s) likeness.”
Ezekial 28:
3 Behold you are wiser than Daniel; Every one of the secret things
is not hidden to you…15 You were perfect in your ways
from the day you were created, until iniquity was found in you.
16 By the multitude of your trade they filled your midst with violence, and you sinned. So I cast you profaned from the height of God,
AND I DESTROYED YOU,
OH COVERING CHERUB,
FROM AMONG THE STONES OF FIRE…
THE STONES OF FIRE ARE THE PLANETS

There was Once an Angelic Civilization on Mars
Cydonia
Throughout the years, there have been quantities of remarkable pictures that have made their way to the public, proving intelligent life had existed on Mars. I have been convinced, for a long time, that Mars was the home to an ancient, but destroyed Angelic Civilization. Most of the photos have been dismissed as tricks of light. However, the interesting thing about all the pictures, that most people seem to forget, is that they have been taken by NASA. In 1976 NASA released a picture of a 1,500 foot high “face” staring out into space from the surface of the Cydonia region on Mars.
Cydonia
The most convincing photo that proves there was an destroyed Angelic Civilization on Mars was found however, on Google. It clearly shows a long, artificial set of tracks running along the Martian surface. By the way, Google Mars is a free application that can be used by anyone.
This find is unique because it cannot be debunked as a digital error or a trick of light. Long straight lines of track are hard to write off. That is why this find was completely ignored by the mainstream media.
To give you some background:
Many eons ago, on the planet Rahab, evil was birthed in the heart of its ruler, Lucifer. The Dark Prince ruled and controlled the many spiritual and physical realms from a stone of fire (planet) called Rahab. This evil is commonly known as pride, but a much more malevolent emotion was lurking under the surface of pride. Put simply, the sin of pride is trouble enough, but back-stabbing greed lurked beneath Lucifer’s pride.
Before Lucifer the Dark Prince rebelled, there was trade between the planets (stones of fire), solar systems, and universes. Mars was one such planet.
He didn’t just rule over the stones of fire, but also interplanetary trade. Rahab was once a planet like ours, orbiting the sun. It was larger than the Earth, more along the lines of Saturn. Its name means boaster or pride because its mass could hold ten Earths. Its orbit was nearly circular. Now all that remains of Rahab is the asteroid belt. Before, like Mars, it was once inhabited with many wonderful beings of the spiritual realm. Unlike Mars, the Lords host destroyed Rahab. Mars a once-beautiful stone of fire had its atmosphere stripped away.
Satan was created to lead the Angelic Civilization, the Sons of God or B’nai ha Elohim, ruling over the “stones of fire” and physical civilizations of angels, such as the one on Mars. After Satan rebelled, the center of his angelic civilization along with his throne on Rahab was destroyed “from among the stones of fire”, yet the Bible tells us Satan is still waiting for the time of God’s judgment. Satan is not in hell, he the Prince of the Powers of the Air, the intelligence behind the demonic UFO phenomena. Satan will soon be “cast out” onto the Earth, “a place will no longer found for him in heaven”(Rev. 12:8).

Such things are certainly things to entertain even if we cannot be certain. It would make 'Nothing new under the sun' a more interesting statement, as it becomes clear as of all the insanity thus far 2021 that Young Earth Creationism is inadequate in explaining the Torah.

2021.08.03 22:46 Dragonfire9000A retrospective look at older comics and why IDW might be the best shot for a decent sonic comic.
A.n.2. if you’ve not read the fleetway, archie and IDW comic series’.. spoilers.. duh…
Ok, before I begin I want to first give a little background about myself. I’m from the UK and picked up sonic properly at age 6 on Christmas. Over here we had a comic known as Sonic the Comic done by fleet way that ran for 223 issues of story, any point after that where re-releases of existing issues.
At 20 I learned of a store in my nearby city that sold archie comics and my now fiancée introduced me to a site that had the archie backlog.
I have read all 276 episodes of fleetway & fleetway online and all 290 episodes of archie along with the online series that picked up where the official writers wrote themselves in to a corner and hit a literal reset button…
And now I read the IDW comics and am currently up to date.
I have shipped characters in the past but I’m never squarely in one camp, more, “I can see that happening and it might mean growth if it does.”
So where do I begin with this.
Fleetway.
To me this comic is home turf, but as I grew older and looked at it in retrospect I realised one glaring flaw.
One of the biggest and most fundamental aspects of a good story is that the characters grow from there experiences. Subtle changes in personality, responsibilities that change there outlook on how they should handle life. ETC. ETC.
As I looked back I realised something about the comic series as a whole. Everyone has character growth bar Sonic.
Let’s compare
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Super sonic’s first appearance
Sonic is:-
Arrogant
Insulting to people close to him
Give people derogatory nicknames including tails and knuckles.
And has a super form who has a personality that would give Carnage from the latest venom film pause for thought.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One could look at sonic and see that the only “real change” is weather he and Super are sharing the same body. Kinda like the hulk. In the Yin Yang balance Sonic was considered the Yang to Super’s Yin.
Half way through the comics the two split and there are now two sides to super, his new Yang and his past Yin.
The good side of Super would have character growth which would culminate into episode 223, Super becomes charged with chaos energy after Jonny Lightfoot sacrifices himself to try and save everyone in an earlier issue from the main threat that super now kills, he is re-merged with sonic and has anything changed?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sonic is:-
Arrogant
Insulting to people close to him
Give people derogatory nicknames including tails and knuckles.
And has a super form who has a personality that would give Carnage from the latest venom film pause for thought.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So did anything change? Well he mourned Jonny… but that’s about it.
I’m sorry wait what happened to the good super who was in the evil super all along?
He literally vanishes into thin air…
Now I was a teen at the time and kept buying issues to hope the story would continue but after 2 months. (4 issues) I stopped as I noticed they where all re-prints.
Roll forward to years later and I now read the fleet way online comic, a continuation of the original series and the good super sonic has been hinted at a few times but never really in any committal capacity.
The series would later go to it’s most impactful arc yet, sonic, public enemy. A multi issue arc where sonic had been framed as a terrorist and followed with the war arc, during which sonic would try to clear his name.
This was a good arc, something like this needs a good payoff, dragged to his lowest point is the easiest time to give characters there biggest changes. The arc ends with both big bads being defeated and sonics name is restored his name cleared and the next panel is years later… what?
So the head righter of STC who also helped with STCO basically said it was his last story and he wanted to go out on a high note but before I get to that two issues later Sonic meets Amy a woman who feels betrayed even though it wasn’t him and her faith in him shattered.
This is set like a week after the war arc and sonic refers to tails as… “pixel brain” the friend who cleared his name and took up the mantle as hero while sonic was on the run. Amy even berates him for it. So, once again….
-----------------------------------------
Sonic is:-
Arrogant
Insulting to people close to him
Give people derogatory nicknames including tails and knuckles.
------------------------------------------
So, a series of events that should be humbling have no change because he has his fame back.
So remember that arc that’s set in the future, a few years?
The Arc is Titled Exit: Sonic and as I mentioned the head writer of STC wanted to go out on a high note which is fine, but the sonic from this arc is very different, more mature and no longer insulative. Here’s my first problem.
Years…
From the sonic we had in the last issue I’ll call point N, and the sonic now I’ll call point Y, so what happened in between?
This is a writers trope I see a lot where a time skip is used to go out on a high note, when done well it can feel well deserved,
But this skip is used so that the main characters can have a drastic series of changes and the writers can just say, “it happened in the skip.” How did Amy and Tekno get together? “it happened in the skip” what caused sonic to change “it happened in the skip”
Godson? ok... how?
https://preview.redd.it/dxig3jtn57f71.png?width=517&format=png&auto=webp&s=6cf93fbaf4ebdd9b498c107eb5e9f11e324744e1
This gap in the story is so that other writers can now try to fill in the void that’s been left open in a way that all the fans can enjoy, but rarely is that achieved. I will admit I feal like I missed something with that Amy/Tekno ship that I had to go back through, twice and still feel like I missed something.
My main question is both how and why, was that what the STC writer wanted at the end? “it just happened” it’s really an answer that flies well with me as Amy right before the public enemy arc, there is a story where Sonic’s body is taken over by an illusionist who offers to marry Amy.
When the truth is revealed Amy with a annoyed look on her face says. “shortest engagement ever” while pointing her crossbow at the villain. Bare in mind this is literally a few issues before the public enemy arc and the war arc. I had to check and I think she teams up with Amy, once in the entire War arc at the beginning in 249 and the war arc spans to 275.
See if you’ve read the series as long as i have a time skip needs to have changed components that feel believable. Now when I go to talk about Archie archie got things like this right but suffered another issue that I will compare to spiderman.
A time skip can be done right all you have to do is sell a person on that time skip, for example, a few stories before the skip that can lead in to the time skip and make things more believable. Instead now that have this massive gap where you may get an explanation that’s shoehorned in and the new comics continue on from this skip baring one or two one off stories.
But I mentioned the good half of supersonic, did that ever get anything from it?
No, no it did not, all that build up to nothing. Good super sonic is not mention again, it’s not used as any plot device to try to evolve the super sonic state and instead is still the murderous psychopath.
Ok, so how could this have been done better if it’s a time skip?
How about along the same lines as the hulk from the cinematic universe, in fact any universe for that matter.
Let’s compare, if sonic where to Bruce Banner then Super is the hulk, Super is clearly an imbalance more Yin than Yang, and that stems from sonic’s own personality. Given that Ember (magick cat lady) said that the good super was still in there and spent so many stories trying to prove it.
Top of my head they could have written an ark were. all you needed to do would be something like a “mind of Sonic” arc where the cat and hedgehog could have dived in to the psyche to find the good super sonic, have it where good super keeps evil contained and the two switch as jail keepers of yin super when the chaos energy bubbles to the surface.
Archie
I loved this series when I got to read it but sadly it became a problem when I noticed something archie does with sonic archie all the time. Ok, so there are several one off sonic future episodes in archie where a future timeline effects the present. However there was one that a lot of fans found truly spectacular.
The king sonic arc, a.k.a. the good future. This was a series of timeskips done well and the arc had two parts, King sonic and King shadow. Where sonic had married sally and become king but an event happened involving chaos that altered time and space resulting in shadow becoming king. The arc has it where sonic and knuckles along with lara-su, knuckles daughter, overthrowing the tyrant. And Sonic marrying Sally.
(bare in mind time had been altered and only a few knew that it had happened. So to Sally this was there first marriage.)
Other than the whole obvious couples there one in the multi time skip that I saw that made me just go… I can believe that.
Tails/Mina, with kids. To me that was genuinely believable given their work ethics at the time and that this was supposedly decades in the future.
But I do have to draw parallels to marvel again. Sonic Archie suffers from the same problem that amazing spiderman had except they did it more often.
The reset button.
Every character in archie did have character growth which was great, but archie suffered from “too many chefs in the kitchen.”
After a specific point Archie began using a term I like to call the reset button, I’ve used it before but it can mean different things depending on context.
Real eggman’s dead? – let’s give him a digital counterpart that could die every arc and reform himself using technology.
Now that’s not a bad reset button nor the ones I’m meaning but more just an example where they wrote themselves in to a bit of a corner and needed to write out of said corner.
The first reset button is the “ultimatum” in Archie sonic get’s flung out in space and lost for a year. Everyone thinks he’s dead and Sally morns her now boyfriend who she just hooked up with right before he went missing.
He returns and his heroics are too much for her to handle… so she basically says “me or defending the people…”
Amazon’s invincible spoiler coming up.
That sounds awfully familiar, ow wait, invincible. Where Amber berates Mark for putting his hero work over her…
So sally who has known him since childhood, is willing to put all of her friends at risk in a war they where loosing before sonic showed up because she can’t take the idea that he might get hurt…
It’s not like she’s in a position of office or power where a leader may have to make the though choices like “send 500 to die here so 2000 can live here…” and would know they need every able body to fight… ow wait she’s the princess of an entire kingdom that’s been at war for a year…
So we then get several stories that cause us to wonder if archie is diverging from the good future but just enough so that every time you think there committing to Sonic/Sally no longer being an option the line diverges back towards the good future.
This goes on for some time right up the genesis wave.
Reset button number 2, raise the stakes…
Eggman has lost his teeth, how do you give back his threat level.
I know let’s have a genesis wave that resets an entire universe and needs chaos control to bring it back but also returns robotisization as an actually thing with Mecha Sally.
Ow god was this Arc dark, it was still in the same universe so it was believable that the potential good future was still going to be a thing, they just needed to jump over this massive 50ft hurdle. Characters where dropping like flies, not dying but changing drastically due to how bad things where going for example.
Bunny signing up with the egg legion because she feels powerless after her husband was put in to a coma. Geoffrey St john potentially becoming possessed by his master, the aforementioned Mecha Sally going on an absolute tear as her friends where unable to commit to taking her out because it was still Sally in there.
And then…
Reset 3, worlds collied
Then the writers wrote themselves in to a corner, so they did a mega man crossover and the universe was changed due to chaos control…
Many aspect of the story where changed and “didn’t happen” to appease fans and a new arch was started. Anything that upset the fans, “didn’t happen” as this timeline was… the same but different… shortly there after Archie lost the sonic licence and sega signed up with IDW.
In all that 3rd reset felt like a verbatim of the spiderman civil war storyline. To save aunt may Peter had to give up his marriage and love to MJ… that is a reset.
However Sonic archie would get picked back up with sonic Archie online. Choosing not to continue the story after the 3rd reset but instead continue from the Mecha Sally ark. The writing is better than archie was originally and the art is on par, the only issue is… the wait time. Currently there last issue was in mid 2020 and we haven’t seen anything since, there not dead as the discord is very much active but it will take a while per issue.
There committed to seeing this storyline on and I’m glad to wait on there work however for now this is one comic series I’m glad to see.
IDW
Character growth on all main characters? Check
Deep stories that can appeal to older sonic fans? Check
Can it commit to darker moments? Check, in spades
When IDW took over I’ll admit I was sceptical, I wondered if it would be more of the same issues. Ow boy was I wrong, not only can they write in character growth like there’s no tomorrow but anyone who’s read the IDW comics knows what these words mean and how dark it went. “Metal Virus”
Characters admit there strengths and weaknesses and try to improve, psychological horror on characters sticks. Every issue coherently follows on from the last and is a genuine delight to read. Currently it’s only a year or so old in issue run but it is so good.
The series follows on from the end of sonic forces but has since grown in to it’s own story and I have loved every panel.

Though this is rarely mentioned in print, Garfield is set in Jim Davis' hometown of Muncie, Indiana, according to the television special Happy Birthday, Garfield. Common themes in the strip include Garfield's laziness, obsessive eating, love of coffee and lasagna, disdain of Mondays, and diets. Garfield is also shown to manipulate people to get whatever he wants. The strip's focus is mostly on the interactions among Garfield, Jon, and Odie, but other recurring minor characters appearing as well.
Originally created with the intentions to 'come up with a good, marketable character',[2] Garfield has spawned merchandise earning $750 million to $1 billion annually. In addition to the various merchandise and commercial tie-ins, the strip has spawned several animated television specials, two animated television series, two theatrical feature-length live-action/CGI animated films, and three fully CGI animated direct-to-video films.
Part of the strip's broad pop cultural appeal is due to its lack of social or political commentary; though this was Davis's original intention, he also admitted that his 'grasp of politics isn't strong', joking that, for many years, he thought 'OPEC was a denture adhesive'.[3][4]
On August 6, 2019, New York City-based ViacomCBS announced that it would acquire Paws, Inc., including the rights to the Garfield franchise (the comics, merchandise and animated cartoons). The deal did not include the rights to the Garfield films,[5] which are still owned by The Walt Disney Company through its 20th Century Studios label. Jim Davis will continue to make comics, and a new Garfield animated series is in production for ViacomCBS subsidiary Nickelodeon.[6]
Cartoonist Jim Davis was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana. In 1972, while working as an assistant for T.K. Ryan's Tumbleweeds, he created the comic strip Gnorm Gnat, which ran only in the Pendleton Times of Pendleton, Indiana, from 1972 to 1975 and met with little success. Davis had tried to syndicate the strip, but was unsuccessful; he noted that one editor told him that his 'art was good, his gags were great, [but] nobody can identify with bugs.'[7] Davis decided to peruse current comic strips to determine what species of animal characters might be more popular. He felt that dogs were doing well, but noticed no prominent cats. Davis figured he could create a cat star, having grown up on a farm with twenty-five cats. Thus was created the character of Garfield.[7]
Garfield, the star, was based on the cats Davis grew up around; he took his name and personality from Davis' grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis, whom he described as 'a large, cantankerous man.'[8] The name Jon Arbuckle came from a 1950s coffee commercial. Jon's roommate Lyman, added to give Jon someone to talk with, carried on the name of an earlier Gnorm Gnat character.[7] The final character was Lyman's dog Spot, who was renamed Odie so as to avoid confusion with a dog also named Spot in the comic strip Boner's Ark. From 1976 to early 1978, these characters appeared in a strip called Jon which also ran in the Times.[9]
The early prototype strips were not generally well documented and were considered to be lost media until 2019, when a YouTube channel by the name of Quinton Reviews was able to retrieve several digital scans of the Jon publications from the Pendleton Community Library and Indiana State Library, after gathering information via a blog post.[10][11][12] Jon first appeared in the Pendleton Times on January 8, 1976, just two weeks after Gnorm Gnat ended.
United Feature Syndicate accepted the strip for national distribution, which had been retitled Garfield on September 1, 1977, in March 1978 (ending its run in the Times on the 2nd) and made its nationwide debut in 41 newspapers on June 19 of that year (however, after a test run, the Chicago Sun-Times dropped it, only to reinstate it after readers' complaints).[1][13]
The Garfield Sunday strip was launched on June 25, 1978;[14] it was available only at a third-page size until March 22, 1981.[15] A half-page debuted the following Sunday, March 29.[16] The Sunday strips for March 14[17] and 21, 1982,[18] tried out a unique nine-panel format, but UFS curtailed further use of it. (UFS did, however, allow Davis to use the format for his later U.S. Acres strip.)
The appearance of the characters gradually changed over time.[19] The left panel is taken from the March 7, 1980, strip; the right is from the July 6, 1990, strip. The strip underwent stylistic changes, evolving from the style of the 1976–83 strips, to a more cartoonish look from 1984 onward. This change has mainly affected Garfield's design, which underwent a 'Darwinian evolution' in which he began walking on his hind legs, 'slimmed down', and 'stopped looking ... through squinty little eyes' His evolution, according to Davis, was to make it easier to 'push Odie off the table' or 'reach for a piece of pie.'[19]
Garfield quickly became a commercial success. In 1981, less than three years after its nationwide launch, the strip appeared in 850 newspapers and accumulated over $15 million in merchandise. To manage the merchandise, Davis founded Paws, Inc.[13] In 1982 the strip was appearing in more than 1,000 newspapers.[20]
By 2002, Garfield became the world's most syndicated strip, appearing in 2,570 newspapers with 263 million readers worldwide;[1] by 2004, Garfield appeared in nearly 2,600 newspapers and sold from $750 million to $1 billion worth of merchandise in 111 countries.[21] In 1994, Davis's company, Paws, Inc., purchased all rights to the strips from 1978 to 1993 from United Feature. The strip is currently distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, while rights for the strip remain with Paws.
While retaining creative control and being the only signer, Davis now only writes and usually does the rough sketches. Since the late 1990s most of the work has been done by long-time assistants Brett Koth and Gary Barker. Inking and coloring work is done by other artists, while Davis spends most of the time supervising production and merchandising the characters.[21]
Garfield was originally created by Davis with the intention to come up with a 'good, marketable character'.[2] Now the world's most syndicated comic strip,[22] Garfield has spawned a 'profusion'[21] of merchandise including clothing, toys, games, books, Caribbean cruises, credit cards, dolls,[23] DVDs of the movies or the TV series,[24] and related media.[2
Internet Garfield.com was the strip's official website, which contained archives of past strips along with games and an online store. Jim Davis had also collaborated with Ball State University and Pearson Digital Learning to create www.ProfessorGarfield.org, an educational website with interactive games focusing on math and reading skills, and with Children's Technology Group to create MindWalker, a web browser that allows parents to limit the websites their children can view to a pre-set list.[26][27][28]
A variety of edited Garfield strips had been made available on the Internet, some hosted on their own unofficial, dedicated sites. Dating from 2005, a site called the 'Garfield Randomizer' created a three-panel strip using panels from previous Garfield strips.[29] Another approach, known as 'Silent Garfield',[30] involved removing Garfield's thought balloons from the strips.[31] Some examples date from 2006.[32] A webcomic called Arbuckle does the above but also redraws the originals in a different art style. The Arbuckle website creator writes: 'Garfield' changes from being a comic about a sassy, corpulent feline, and becomes a compelling picture of a lonely, pathetic, delusional man who talks to his pets. Consider that Jon, according to Garfield canon, cannot hear his cat's thoughts. This is the world as he sees it. This is his story'.[33]
Another variation along the same lines, called 'Realfield' or 'Realistic Garfield', was to redraw Garfield as a real cat as well as removing his thought balloons.[34][35] Still another approach to editing the strips involved removing Garfield and other main characters from the originals completely, leaving Jon talking to himself. While strips in this vein could be found online as early as 2006,[32] the 2008 site Garfield Minus Garfield by Dan Walsh received enough online attention to be covered by news media. Reception was largely positive: at its peak, the site received as many as 300,000 hits per day. Fans connected with Jon's 'loneliness and desperation' and found his 'crazy antics' humorous; Jim Davis himself called Walsh's strips an 'inspired thing to do' and said that 'some of [the strips] work better [than the originals]'.[36][37] Ballantine Books, which publishes the Garfield books, released a volume of Garfield Minus Garfield strips on October 28, 2008. The volume retains Davis as author and features a foreword by Walsh.[34]
On June 19, 2020, the website was shut down during the strip's 42nd anniversary, following Viacom's acquisition of Paws, Inc. in August 2019. The website now redirects to Nick.com, with an alternative link to GoComics.
Television:
Garfield's animation debut was on The Fantastic Funnies, which aired on CBS on May 15, 1980, voiced by actor Scott Beach. Garfield was one of the strips featured, introduced as a newcomer (the strip was only two years old at the time). From 1982 to 1991, twelve primetime Garfield cartoon specials and one hour-long primetime documentary celebrating the character's 10th anniversary were aired; Lorenzo Music voiced Garfield in all of them. A Saturday morning cartoon show, Garfield and Friends, aired for seven seasons from 1988 to 1994. This adaption also starred Music as the voice of Garfield.
The Garfield Show, a CGI series, started development in 2007 to coincide with the strip's 30th anniversary in 2008.[38] It premiered in France in December 2008 and made its U.S. debut on Cartoon Network on November 2, 2009. A new series is currently in development at Nickelodeon after the rights were acquired from Nickelodeon's parent company ViacomCBS.[39]
Films
Garfield: The Movie was released in theaters on June 11, 2004. Its sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, was released on June 16, 2006. Garfield was voiced by actor Bill Murray in both films. Three direct-to-video films were released, Garfield Gets Real on August 9, 2007, Garfield's Fun Fest on August 5, 2008, and Garfield's Pet Force on June 16, 2009. On May 24, 2016, it was announced that Alcon Entertainment will develop a new CG animated Garfield film with John Cohen and Steven P. Wegner ready to produce[52][53] and to be directed by Mark Dindal, director of Cats Don't Dance, The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little.[54] In August 2019, Viacom acquired the rights to Garfield, leaving the status of the movie for the time uncertain.[6] That was until December 2020, in an interview with The Walt Disney Family Museum where Dindal confirmed that the movie is still in production.[55]
Video games
A Garfield video game was developed by Atari, Inc. for its Atari 2600 home video game system and appears in their 1984 catalog.[56] However, after Atari's spinoff and sale of its home games and computers division, owner Jack Tramiel decided the character's royalties were too expensive given the declining state of the video game industry at the time, and the game was cancelled.[57] A ROM image of the game was however released with Jim Davis' blessing.[57]
Garfield: Big Fat Hairy Deal is a 1987 video game for the Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and the Amiga based on the comic strip. Towa Chiki made A Week of Garfield for the Family Computer, released only in Japan in 1989. Sega also made the 1995 video game Garfield: Caught in the Act for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Gear and Windows 3.1 computers. Other companies made games, such as A Tale of Two Kitties for the DS, published by Game Factory, Garfield's Nightmare for DS, Garfield's Funfest for DS, and Garfield Labyrinth for Game Boy. On PlayStation 2 were Garfield and Garfield 2 (known in the US as Garfield, a Tale of Two Kitties). Garfield Lasagna World Tour was also made for PS2. Garfield: Saving Arlene was only released in Japan and in the United Kingdom. And recent additions for mobile devices are 'Garfield's Diner' and 'Garfield's Zombie Defense'.
Konami also released a Garfield Handheld electronic game titled Lasagnator in 1991, which met with mild success.
In 2012, a series of Garfield video games was launched by French publisher Anuman Interactive, including My Puzzles with Garfield!, Multiplication Tables with Garfield, Garfield Kart, and Garfield's Match Up.[58]
Comic book
In agreement with Paws, Boom! Studios launched in May 2012 a monthly Garfield comic book, with the first issue featuring a story written by Mark Evanier (who has supervised Garfield and Friends and The Garfield Show) and illustrated by Davis's long-time assistant Gary Barker.[60]
Art book
In 2016, Hermes Press signed an agreement with Paws, Inc to publish an art book on the art of author Jim Davis, titled The Art of Jim Davis' Garfield.[61] The book includes an essay by author R.C. Harvey and other original material, and was released in July 2016 for the San Diego Comic-Con.[61]
Restaurant
In 2018, a ghost restaurant themed after the franchise known as GarfieldEATS was opened in Dubai. Customers order food through the official mobile app, which also contains games and allows users to purchase episodes of Garfield and Friends. The restaurant serves lasagna, Garfield-shaped pizza, 'Garfuccinos', and Garfield-shaped dark chocolate bars. A second location opened in Toronto in 2019.[62][63] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a dispute over rent, the restaurant closed in 2020.
Garfield First appearance: June 19, 1978
I'm not overweight, I'm undertall. —Garfield At Large: his First Book (1980)[65] Garfield is an orange, fuzzy tabby cat born in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant (later revealed in the television special Garfield: His 9 Lives to be Mama Leoni's Italian Restaurant) who immediately ate all the pasta and lasagna in sight, thus developing his love and obsession for lasagna and pizza.[66][67]
Gags in the strips commonly deal with Garfield's obesity (in one strip, Jon jokes: 'I wouldn't say Garfield is fat, but the last time he got on a Ferris wheel, the two guys on top starved to death'),[68] and his disdain of any form of exertion or work. He is known for saying 'breathing is exercise'.
Though Garfield can be very cynical, he does have a soft side for his teddy bear, Pooky, food and sleep, and in one Christmas he says: 'They say I have to get up early, be nice to people, skip breakfast ... I wish it would never end.' However, in the feature film Garfield Gets Real and its sequels, Garfield is better behaved, friendlier towards Jon and Odie, less self-centered, and more sympathetic.
It has been wondered by many readers if Garfield can actually be understood by the human characters around him. Sometimes, it seems like Jon can hear him. However, it is mentioned in more than one strip that Jon cannot understand Garfield.[69] However, in the feature film Garfield Gets Real and its sequels, Garfield and the other animals save for Odie are able to talk to, and be understood by, Jon and the other humans. In the April 1, (April Fools' Day) 1997 strip drawn by the artists of Blondie as part of the comic strip switcheroo,[70] Garfield, still with thought balloons, can be understood by Jon.
To break the fourth wall, June 19 is celebrated within the strip as Garfield's birthday. The appearance in 1979 claimed it to be his first birthday, although in the first appearance of the strip (June 19, 1978), he was portrayed as a fully-grown cat, implying that the birthday is of the strip itself.[71]
Jon Arbuckle First appearance: June 19, 1978
Jon: Here's my sixth-grade report card. My parents were so proud. Garfield, reading the report card: 'Jon has not shoved any crayons up his nose this term.' —Garfield (1996)[72] Jon (Jonathan Q. Arbuckle) is Garfield's owner, usually depicted as an awkward clumsy geek who has trouble finding a date. Jon had a crush on Liz (Garfield's veterinarian) and is now dating her. Jon disapproves of Garfield's 'don't care, not interested', attitude, and often encourages his pet to take an interest in the world around him, sometimes stating an interesting fact, or asking a philosophical question in an attempt to prompt Garfield into thought, Garfield tends to brush this off with a simple, yet logical remark, and despite the trouble Garfield causes, Jon has a heart of gold and is very tolerant of Garfield's shortcomings, a fact which Garfield often takes advantage of. In the December 23, 1980, strip, Jon states that he is thirty years old (nominally meaning he should presently be in his sixties, although he has not aged physically). His birthday is July 28.[73][74]
Jon loves (or occasionally hates) Garfield and all cats. Many gags focus on this; his inability to get a date is usually attributed to his lack of social skills, his poor taste in clothes (Garfield remarked in one strip after seeing his closet that 'two hundred moths committed suicide';[75] in another, the 'geek police' ordered Jon to 'throw out his tie'),[76] and his eccentric interests which range from stamp collecting to measuring the growth of his toenails to watching movies with 'polka ninjas'. Other strips portray him as lacking intelligence (he is seen reading a pop-up book in one strip).[77]
Jon was born on a farm that apparently contained few amenities; in one strip, his father, upon seeing indoor plumbing, remarks: 'Woo-ha! Ain't science something?'[78] Jon occasionally visits his parents, brother and grandmother at their farm. It was implied that Jon is inspired by a drawing of Davis himself when he was first drawing the strip. Jon was portrayed as a cartoonist in the first strip[79] and occasional others in the early years; Davis stated his intent had been to express his own frustrations as a cartoonist. Ultimately, Jon's job has been referenced far more frequently in Garfield animated series than in the strip.
Odie First appearance: August 8, 1978[80]
Jon: I think I'm having some kind of identity crisis. Garfield, walking past Odie who is lying in a kitchen drawer: He thinks he's having an identity crisis ... Odie thinks he's a potato peeler. —Garfield (1991)[81] Odie is a yellow, long-eared beagle with a large, slobbering tongue, who walks on all four legs, though occasionally he will walk on two like Garfield. He was originally owned by Jon's friend Lyman, though Jon adopted him after Lyman was written out of the strip. The book Garfield: His 9 Lives (1984) retcons Odie's origin: there is no mention of Lyman, and Odie was a puppy when he was acquired by Jon as company for Garfield (when Garfield was a kitten).
Odie is younger than Garfield and usually portrayed as naïve, happy, affectionate and blissfully unaware of Garfield's cynical, sadistic nature, despite the physical abuse Garfield exhibits toward him, including regularly kicking him off the kitchen table or tricking him into going over the edge himself. On some occasions, however, he is depicted more intelligently, as one strip, in which he holds a heavy rock to prevent Garfield from doing this, and actually hurts Garfield's foot. In one strip when Garfield and Jon are out of the house, Odie is seen reading War and Peace and watching An Evening With Mozart on television,[82] but in 'Ask a Dog' strips, he is depicted as illiterate and has to be read to by Garfield. Odie has only thought once. In another strip, published on January 28, 2010, he is seen solving Jon's sudoku puzzle.
Dr. Liz Wilson First appearance: June 26, 1979
Jon: Tell me, Liz, haven't we met somewhere before? A rice paddy in Hong Kong? Liz: Look, jerk. I'll be the vet for your cat, but I won't play fall guy for your stupid lines. Understood?
Jon, shocked: Uh-huh. So long, doctor.
Liz: Have a nice day. —Garfield (1979)[83] Dr. Liz Wilson is Garfield and Odie's sarcastic veterinarian and a long time crush of Jon Arbuckle. She has a somewhat deadpan, sardonic persona and almost always reacts negatively to Jon's outlandish and goofball behavior but can even find it endearing on occasion. Jon often attempted to ask her out on a date, but rarely succeeded; however, in an extended story arc from June 20 to July 29, 2006 (the main event on July 28), Liz and Jon kiss, and have been a couple ever since.[84]

[EDIT 2] I've added more bullet points from replies in this thread. Thanks for the information! If you have anything else please let me know so I can add to it.[EDIT] Great discussion is going guys. There's a few things I wanted to address instead of replying the same thing to everybody and a few more points to add, instead of replying one-by-one:
Reiteration that everybody has a right to their opinions. We all enjoy this game and some are more passionate than others in both sides of the coin and that is fine, but please be respectful and try to understand where the other person is coming from.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I, and many others jumped in to NGS and knew we were not expecting some kind of AAA video games polished with so much content but there really is an empty-feeling of being in an open beta/early access stage right now.
The fact is, if they actually delayed this game to release until much later, say at the very least two months from now, we wouldn't be having most of these complaints. It feels rushed out,
Genshin Impact has been widely used as a comparison because it is the most recent and successful 'free game', comparisons are further drawn because they're both worlds you can roam, collectables and mobs sprinkled around it with timers, a currency you purchase for more goods that you don't need to. We know they're different games, but the reality is that the fact NGS paywalls simple conveniences such as Material Storage and access to the market board with premium makes it feel like a mobile game in business practice sense.
We ask for modernity in New Genesis. It's 2021 and the game should not feel old or like a downgrade from Base PSO2.
'What do you expect us to do about it/what is the point in making threads like these?'
The reason why so many threads like these are popping-up should bring to attention maybe there is something wrong and we're not just complaining for the sake of it. Have you checked posts sorting by new? Have you looked at the New Player Q&A threads where practically all the same questions pop-up such as 'how do you trade in this game'? Feedback reports and surveys are a thing. They listened to some things we addressed in CBT.
More bugs, player comments, posts, and complaint feedbacks, as well previously featured and now-removed features:
- Marketboard search bugs and not working that was in CBT and still hasn't been fixed-yet.
- No more 'Check Item/Augment Market Prices' inventory option
- Players DO want to purchase premium because they like and want to support the game. They even wouldn't mind if they had to pay a monthly subscription, but there is little to no-reason to spend your hard-earned money on a Pass that practically offers you nothing.
- Game-breaking meseta decrease when using quick-sell, putting free players even more in the poor pit.
- Addition to the previous game-breaking meseta decrease bug, as it happens also when you **level-up**
- No way for a free player to make meseta, other than doing dailies and weeklies and UQ for some pocket money.
- ARKS appreciatian/premium day to be added at a later date
- Gameguard issue preventing from people playing the game.
- Players recieving a daily that they cannot complete because they don't have the BP
- Players recieving a daily that they cannot complete because there's lack of resources (lobsers in North Aelio)
- You can't bind controls to CTRL or Shift (unsure about latter key, need confirmation)
- ' The 'premium' costs £10.39/month - which is more than wow's £9.99/month and ffxiv's £7.69/month. It's tacky.' - veraltofgivia
- ' I see the same thing being said over and over again where people are saying the 6$/mo isn't bad or 13$/mo isn't that much etc.And they're right! It isn't bad at all for a FULL game with actual lots of content. Comparing it to other MMOs and how they have a subscription model to have content is not at all fair. And yes I know this game is different and I'm not at all expecting to have a theme park MMO experience in this game. However, that said, this game clearly is currently VERY light on content. I feel like I'm playing a trial for a full game not yet released. Is that a bad thing? No. I didn't pay anything. That's why I feel like there's no way this is worth my money at the moment.' - Rusty_pirate_hook
- ' No one is asking for 8 years worth of content. Just more than a week. Side activities, fluff, whatever. I think we all inherently understand they will add (back) things someday later, months, years. But this launch is a week worth of play/grind at best. ' - rinjyu
- The lack of free Player Personal Shop is hurting players more than helping the Bot problem - spoonfeed_Me
- 'i forgot to mention you didint mention that looks are bugged rn, if you load an accessory that uses the new placement or color options it does not load them, the salon however will thankfully - Zombieemperor
- 'Anyone mentioned how the NGS graphics update destroyed the PSO2 graphics? Someone explained it to me like this:
I think they just hardcoded pso2 to use lowest graphics quality setting possible after the update with no way of changing it in options, unless someone finds the file for the setting and mods it I guess, who knows for what reason, but when you look at screenshots of people using lowest graphics settings before ngs for example, the similarities to what pso2 looks like now are quite striking, I dont know if they just deleted all the non-lowest graphics settings textures and models but considering thesize of the game is about the same + ngs I think textures and models themselves are available as files to use as before, but it is simply hardcoded lowest setting causing it to look like trash by not using them' - graywisteria
- Another bug for the list: Humanoid body 1 (male) players are unable to preview innerwears in the AC Scratch prize list. - Revent7
Also I'm typing all of this on my phone.
'Base PSO2 had less content than what NGS started with'
Why do people believe this argument is okay? Stop comparing this game to one that came out nine years ago; SEGA wanted to breach the general audience and draw more people to their game to make Phantasy Star Online well-known in the West with NGS. The fact that Pso2 was nine years ago should further highlight that a game, an MMO and not a small-indie-company-btw should have more to offer upon first launch considering how long they've had.
'Base Pso2 had 9 years of content crammed in to 1 year. Of course you feel like it has no content'
A large percentage of players aren't playing New Genesis as their first MMO, heck or even their first video game. We've had the opportunity to play multitudes of titles and now have an idea of what to expect. So, New Genesis is being treated as a new game so we review it accordingly. New Genesis feels incredibly bare bones right now, as though the whole game is the prologue. Why is it that mobile games like Genshin Impact had more gameplay, story, things to do than New Genesis on their first release?
'lol no-lifers complaining about lack of content when they rushed it all'
There is no replayability or variance of different things to do ie side content, and even if a no-lifer rushed it, I would have expcted a new MMO at least a week to reach the end of having absolutely no other content to do, not two days.
No dungeons or variance of things you could do with friends other than party with an Emergency Quest or grind PSE bursts, no training grounds or something similar to Genshins' Abyss to practice or test your mettle, no personal room to mess about with, no casino, or mini-games, or something to grind towards which gives you a cosmetic for free players, no fishing (admit it, it would be pretty nice), no achievements other than story-related ones nor titles, a laughably short story, doesn't take long to get to what basically is 'New Game Plus', other than red or green chests not given many reasons to explore the (kinda) small world.
The game brings Cocoons or trials which gives no reason to 100% it because it doesn't offer you anything else, not even a title, and even when you do go to 100% it, it doesn't take long and isn't very challenging.
The story is less than a day of playing in length if you take out the grinding for BP to the next missions.
'Go to FFXIV if you want a story' - NGS story seems better than base PSO2, also this isn't a good excuse.
'No trading means no bots or RMT' - every MMO in the history of mankind will never successfully batter bots or RMT. If there's a will, there's a way. All it does is exclaim to new players 'what kinda MMO doesn't let you trade to friends???'
It's also not a great point when there's no way for a free player to acquire personal shop passes, providing a great divide in money between free players who don't want to pay for premium because there's not much else for it, and premium players.
Guys, please. This is not okay. I'm starting to understand that this model is drip-fed content where they release small doses monthly, but this game could be so much better, I feel like they should have waited to release it when they had more content ready, like for example maybe in SeptembeOctober when the Founders Pack releases?
More things that's killing quality of life:
- The lag.
- The launch pushed back several hours caused a bad first impression for many, and people have compared it to FFXIV's launch from a few years ago, but SE has learned from it; Shadowbringers had a good launch.
- They mentioned including a system where you can gather your party to enter a different zone together, or create a passworded instance to allow friends join 8/8. The button is there but it's not been implemented, or crashes your client - it hasn't been addressed or mentioned when we should expect this to work.
- Transfer to friends block not working.
- Needing to be in the same block and same region/map/loading zone to send a party invite, especially when parties aren't broken up anymore if you leave the block.
- Needing everyone to be in the same loading screen to accept Emergency Quest. If one player in party is not in the same area and the party leader queues in, everyone in the party except for that one player will teleport to the Emergency instance, and still be in party. The single player will have to queue up separately.
- Should be allowed to form parties or invite in the small window when you begin an Emergency quest.
- 'Unable to withdraw items from personal shop' bug.
- Multi-weapon camos not working if you try to set it for different weapons.
- No personal shop passes or any way for a non-premium player to sell items.
- Not non-premium friendly.
- Premium pass isn't worth it right now. Main benefit for it is using the personal shop.
- Feels like a mobile game.
- Skinny skill trees
- Not enough general content or variance.
- Very confusing and poor UI, especially when trying to explain PSo2 and NGS exists side-by-side (did you know there's a pso2 inventory when you're in NGS? Extra 50 storage, or the reason you couldn't for the life of you not find the camos you wanted to bring over to NGS)
- Casts need to pay $80 for their hover motion.
- Did I mention the lag?
- Multi-weapons in theory is a great and fun idea but... Not explained very well or effective.

2021.06.01 06:25 BasicallyAGod12323/PST/PC ARK GENESIS 2 BABY!
Release date is June 2nd! Looking for players who are down to squad up and have some fun on the new map! Not opposed to playing on other maps, but I really want to check this one out and make the most of it
NotKarl#4908 is my discord.
not opposed to playing with mods, not really looking to play on the official servers as they have rates that make the game much to grindy for me, I’m obviously not looking for easy mode but also I’m not looking to watch something tame for over an hour if I can help it! But once again
